Delayed Dysfunction

Ejaculation is the process of releasing semen from the penis and on average occurs within 5 1/2 minutes of intercourse. Delayed dysfunction is a male sexual disorder where you have difficulty ejaculating even after prolonged sexual activity (30 to 60 minutes). You may have trouble ejaculating even if your erection is adequate. Most conditions of delayed ejaculation develop over time, but some cases may be life-long.

Delayed dysfunction may be caused by

  • Medical conditions: Diabetes, multiple sclerosis, increasing age, injury to the spine, surgery to the prostate or bladder.
  • Medications: Antidepressants, antipsychotics, blood pressure medications, muscle relaxants and pain killers
  • Psychological factors: Stress, depression, relationship problems or past sexual failures.

If you or your partner experience dissatisfaction as a result of delayed dysfunction, you must not hesitate to contact your physician as these problems are common and often treatable. Your doctor will review your symptoms as well as your medical and family history. You will be interviewed to find out if you have any psychological issues or relationship problems that could be an underlying cause. Blood and urine samples may be tested for cholesterol and hormone levels,

Your doctor will recommend therapy to resolve marital issues, improve intimacy, remove psychological blocks and counsel you on sexual techniques or aids that can enhance sexual activity, increasing your stimulation for ejaculation. Medications causing delayed dysfunction are stopped, altered or supplemented with other medications that counter their sexual side effects.
